Artist Statement:
My research is influenced by the study of adolescent psychology, feminist art and contemporary media.
In this body of work, I am exploring some of the ongoing questions women confront about beauty, purity and identity. I am interested in observing young girls in our society to see what influences their self perception and confidence.
Experiences in childhood and adolescence in America are widely varied and based upon each individuals’ reality; the search for the true self is common to every child. Young girls spend years reinventing themselves to fit into an accepted cultural mold that is shaped from the influences of peers, media, parents and extended family or communities. These influences teach girls about body image and gender roles valued within their society.
My own struggle as a young woman has left many questions about why girls will do almost anything to be liked. What drives us to attempt to be everything to those around us? At what point do we grow out of this cycle and connect with our true identity, or do we ever really reach this achievement?
I am inspired and motivated by the women in my life. The women who are self-assured and give so unselfishly of their own life experiences encourage me to continue to grow.
